1. How much will my flooring cost?
This depends on the wood, grade and quality of the product you purchase.

2. When and why do I need a damp proof or moisture barrier?
To protect the flooring from normal moisture levels within your home and fluctuating moisture levels within properties through summer and winter seasonal weather changes.

3. Why do I need a Liquid DPM, Damp Proof Membrane or Primer or for concrete?
To protect the flooring from residual moisture levels, found in most concrete floors and in all sub-floors both in domestic homes and commercial buildings.It also stabilises the surface of the concrete and acts as a key for the adhesive to fix to.

4. Why do I need two plastic Damp proof Moisture sheets to go under ply sheeting?
One under the ply sheet protecting it from Sub floor residual moisture and one over the ply sheet as a barrier for the hard wood against moisture in the ply sheet. On some occasions we install Kraft or bitumen paper here too.

5. Can I fit the solid wood floor myself?
All our fitters are highly trained and certified experts at fitting solid hard wood flooring. They possess specialist tools and measuring equipment that can test for relative humidity and moisture in the sub floor. This is an imperative and critical part of the process to any quality solid wood floor during the fitting process.

6. How much waste do I account for when working out how much wood I need to purchase?
When the floor has a plank width less than 100mm - 8%.
All other situations - 10%.

7. Can we fit the solid wood into toilets and bathrooms?
Yes, however this would carry no guarantee and we do not recommended this option. We do often install solid wood in bathrooms and toilets, but we ensure there is a more than sufficient expansion gap and advise the customer to have a door threshold, that can be removed if there is an overflow on the toilet. Wood is not guaranteed in toilets, bathrooms or high humidity areas because of the very high water content and fluctuations of humidity levels found in these areas.

8. Why do I need the sub floor levelled with screed or ply sheet?
An uneven sub-floor can cause extra or localised stress to be placed on the flooring and fixings when the floor is in use and, over time, will lead to problems. These problems won’t be covered under the product’s warranty because it will not have been installed to the manufacturer’s specified level tolerances. This is why it is important to start with a level sub-floor. As a side note, we always advise the use of WBPCC ply sheet as it does not introduce any moisture into the installation. Ply would normally be fully bonded with a suitable adhesive and screwed down (dependant on the levels). Ply is also necessary in all solid wood installations over a solid/concrete sub-floor for fixing the flooring.

9. Can I float a solid wood floor?
The simple answer is that, yes, you can float a solid wood floor, but we would not recommend it for various reasons. For further advice on floating a solid wood floor click here
