Derek’s gems

If you are thinking of installing external decking, how do you make sure that you buy a product that will last? How do you make sure that it will retain its value and appearance? And, how do you minimise the risk of excessive weathering or discolouration? Here are a few tips to help you get the most from your investment.

  • Make sure that rainwater will drain away! Use support blocks to achieve a perfectly level surface but make sure that the sub-frame is built with a very slight fall (a gradient of between 1 & 2% should be sufficient.)
  • Avoid water ingress at board ends. Make sure all cut edges are chamfered & treat with one of our oil-based wood preservative.
  • To make the most of the natural beauty of the wood, mix boards from different packs and mix colour variations to ensure an even effect across the deck.
  • Finally, to ensure visual balance, make sure that the first and last row of boards are the same width. As a rule of thumb, this will need to be done if the last row would need to be reduced to a width of less than 7cm.

Now that we are all out enjoying the garden, it is a good time to give your interior floors a thorough spring-clean. A high quality wood floor will last a lifetime - but it needs some TLC to keep it looking and performing at its best.

  • Avoid using abrasives, floor wax, polishes or steam cleaners on a solid wood floor. They will discolour the wood.
  • Try and avoid getting sand or grit on your floor. They act like sandpaper and will spoil its finish and appearance.
  • Wipe spilt liquids up as soon as you can – letting liquid soak into your floor will cause damage and staining.

We recommend that you use a specialist proprietary cleaner to maintain your floor in optimum condition. For example, the Bona cleaning kit is designed specifically for high quality wood flooring. It is available from both the shop and www.qualitywoodflooring.co.uk/prods/2.html, and comes complete with the cleaner and all the tools you need. So, why not give it a go?
