Professional or DIY floor restoration?
Can't I just hire the machines and do it myself?
In short, yes, you can – but why would you?
To get a truly professional finish you’ll need a belt or drum sander, an edging sander and an orbital buffer – these can cost up to a £100 per day to hire. Then you’ll need abrasives in various grits (from coarse to fine finishing grades and screens for between lacquer coats), filling compounds and lacquers. Sanding belts are around £5 each (you’ll need at a bare minimum three) and the cheapest lacquers are about £35 for 5 litres (for a good hard wearing one it’s more like £50-60). And that’s before you even start: the sanding machines need to be setup correctly to avoid gouging lines in your floor from loose belts or uneven sanding; stains need to be applied evenly and consistently and allowed to dry to avoid reaction with the lacquer, and; lacquer needs to be applied smoothly with a good quality applicator (whether roller or bar) to avoid bubbles, lines and pooling. And then there's the time you'll save by not doing it yourself.
